A widespread computer outage has been reported Friday morning, according to USA Today coverage.

Abilene entities have reported experiencing the effects of the outage.

It occurred when cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike uploaded updates to fix a defect in Microsoft's Windows Operating System. The update subsequently disrupted flight operations, banking transactions, hospital systems and public transit.

The situation is not a security incident or cyberattack, CrowdStrike said in a statement early Friday morning.

As of 9:22 a.m., the tech company is "working hard to provide comprehensive and continuous updates with our global customers as quickly as possible," according to the statement.

    Flights canceled across the U.S.

USA Today reported that over 1,000 flights were canceled Friday morning across American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines.

The Abilene Regional Airport, however, had three flights depart Abilene for the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport Friday morning, according to American Airlines' flight status tracker.

"The airport's first departure was delayed for more than an hour due to the outage, but there have been no problems since then," Brian Bethel, city of Abilene public information coordinator, said.

    Hospitals affected

Hendrick Health systems and computers were impacted by the global tech outage, according to the hospital's statement.

"There was no direct impact to patient care, and systems were quickly restored. The team is resolving any residual issues," the statement read.

United Regional Health Care System in Wichita Falls has also been affected and canceled all non-emergency services Friday, according to Times Record News coverage.

Status of Dyess Air Force Base

"Currently, there have been no effects on our computers and operations. We have our own cybersecurity measures set in place," a Dyess Air Force Base public affairs representative stated in an email.

Updates about the outage will be made as the Reporter-News receives them.
