Residents in West Texas felt a 4.9 magnitude earthquake late Monday.

The quake happened around 10:30 p.m. Monday about 50 miles west of Abilene.

There were no reports of any damage, but people as far away as Wichita Falls, Mansfield, and Frisco said they felt it. The quake would rank as the eighth-strongest in Texas history, and aftershocks of 4.4 and 3.1 followed over the next 90 minutes.

An increase in earthquakes has been linked to wastewater from fracking pumped back into the ground. The texas railroad commission has told companies to stop doing that a couple counties farther west around Pecos to try to reduce the number of earthquakes there.
