SCURRY COUNTY, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – A series of earthquakes, including one that was magnitude 4.9, struck Scurry County overnight.

Citizens as far away as Abilene reported feeling the ground shake when the largest earthquake hit just after 10:30 p.m.

The United States Geological Survey says the following series of earthquakes occurred Monday night about 10 miles from Hermleigh, 17 miles from Snyder, 25 miles from Sweetwater, and 60 miles from Abilene:

    • 10:38 P.M. – Magnitude 4.9
    • 10:46 P.M. – Magnitude 4.4
    • 11:56 P.M. – Magnitude 3.1

At least 7 smaller earthquakes ranging from magnitudes 1.9 to 3.0 have occurred in the area since midnight Tuesday.

The earthquake magnitude scale shows that earthquakes ranging from magnitudes 2.5 to 5.4 are often felt but they only cause minor damage.

500,000 earthquakes of this scale are esitmated to happen every year.

If any of the earthquakes had reached magnitude 5.5 or greater, buildings and other structures would have been damaged.
