Help name the Abilene Zoo’s newest addition!

ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – The Abilene Zoo has welcomed a baby girl giraffe to the herd and needs your help naming her.

The giraffe was born on July 20 during the zoo’s birthday celebration, Zippity Zoo Day. She was born to Malaika and Congo, the second from the couple after Fennessy, who was born two years ago.

Malaika, the mother, is taking great care of the baby giraffe and encouraging her to explore. Congo, the father, turned 9 years old during the zoo’s World Giraffe Day celebration in June. He has fathered seven calves, five of which are females.

The 6-day-old giraffe is displaying a very inquisitive and friendly nature. She stands at 6 feet 6 inches tall. Her half-sister, Sara Ann, has already taken an interest, nuzzling and investigating the newest family member.

Following the tradition of Swahili giraffe names at the Abilene Zoo, the three options for her name are Zahara (meaning flower), Uzuri (meaning beauty), and Udadisi (meaning curiosity).

“We have chosen these three names because they reflect a giraffe’s personality, like curiosity and beauty. And for this particular giraffe, also a flower,” shared Katelyn Zak, giraffe zookeeper. “We are so excited for the new baby and for our herd that keeps growing.”

Visit the Abilene Zoo’s Facebook page to vote. The name with the most votes will be announced on Friday, August 2. Currently, the baby is bonding with her mother off-exhibit and will join the herd on exhibit soon.
