ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) — Abilene Independent School District’s Homeless Student Programs hosted two days of school supply drives to donate more than 1,000 backpacks next month.

LIST: 2024-25 first day of school in the Big Country

On July 13th, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Northside Walmart, and on July 27th at Southside Walmart, AISD staff, the Junior League of Abilene, and other volunteers spent the day handing out and collecting school supplies. Darrin Cox, the Homeless Liaison for Abilene ISD, shared that it had been a busy day.

“It went wild. We loaded the bus up once we moved out, and loaded it up again. We stopped handing out cards. It’s Tuesday and people are still bringing things by and helping us out. It’s gonna be a great way to pack the backpacks up, getting ready for all this,” Cox shared.

Wylie ISD implements ‘No Cell from Bell to Bell’ policy: phones prohibited in the classroom.

Supplies collected will be distributed at the Back-to-School Resource Fair and Family Fun Day, which will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on August 10 at the Abilene Convention Center, located at 1100 North 6th Street.
