ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL) – All lanes are back open on Interstate 81 in Abingdon after a tractor-trailer crash prompted a cleanup effort Sunday afternoon, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

The Virginia State Police (VSP) told News Channel 11 that at approximately 2:32 p.m., a tractor-trailer had a tire blowout near mile marker 12 northbound. The truck then ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a guardrail before stopping in the left lane.

VDOT’s traffic map said the north left shoulder and left lane of I-81 were temporarily closed near mile marker 13. According to VDOT, traffic backups were approximately five miles at its worst.

The tractor-trailer reportedly lost diesel fuel due to damage from the crash, resulting in a “hazmat incident.”

The VSP reported that crews are working to clear the scene. No injuries were reported, and the crash is under investigation.
