Abington Heights recovered from losing to the Lackawanna League girls volleyball co-leaders to win its last four matches of September by 3-0 sweeps.

The Comets headed into their Oct. 1 match at Lackawanna Trail with a 6-2 record in the league and an 8-2 overall mark.

Abington Heights is fourth of 16 teams in the Lackawanna standings. The Comets have the third-best power rating among the 12 teams pursuing District 2 Class 3A playoff berths. They also finished second to Athens in a tournament at Tunkhannock in matches that do not count toward the overall record and district rating because they don’t cover the standard high school format of best-of-five sets.

The Comets defeated Lakeland, Mid Valley, Scranton and Montrose in the winning streak between Sept. 17 and Sept. 26. The losses came to North Pocono, District 2’s only unbeaten team, and Wester Wayne, the other unbeaten when it comes to league games only.

Sadie O’Brien, Madison Smith and Brielle Wentz are the team’s statistical leaders.

O’Brien has 55 kills and 13 blocks. Smith has 125 digs. Wentz has 117 assists and 53 service aces.

    LACKAWANNA TRAIL

Lackawanna Trail lost its last five September matches.

The Lady Lions are 2-6 in the league and 2-8 overall. They are third in a four-way seeding race for the District 2 Class A semifinals.
