Atlantic City superintendent pays handicap parking ticket before court date

Atlantic City’s superintendent will not have to appear in municipal court Monday, after paying a ticket for parking illegally in a handicap spot.

Dr. La'Quetta Small was ticketed for parking in a handicap spot at the Home Depot in Absecon last month.

Police came to the parking lot May 31, after an Atlantic City business owner reported her.

Small told the officers who responded she had a placard allowing her to park in the spot, but did not have it with her.

She later said she would send a copy of the identification card, but that it would be in her mother's name. Her mother, who lives with the Smalls, was not with her at the Home Depot.

Video from the officers' body-worn cameras along with audio of the call John Exadaktilos made to police were previously released to BreakingAC as part of an Open Public Records Request.

Exadaktilos, owner of the Ducktown Tavern, took pictures and video from the area as well.

Some people claim Exadaktilos is targeting the superintendent and her husband, Mayor Marty Small, who often is the focus of a show he regularly posts on Facebook Live.

The city-issued vehicle is part of her contract as schools superintendent.

The mayor also has a city-issued vehicle.

Dr. Small had a court date for Monday evening. But she instead pleaded to the ticket and paid $291.49, court records show.

Her attorney is listed as Jordan Barbone from the same law firm that is representing her husband in their criminal case.

Ed Jacobs is defending the mayor on charges and he and his wife physically abused their teenage daughter.

Dr. Small is being represented by attorney Michael Schreiber in that case.

The Smalls were due in court last month for a pre-indictment conference, but their attorneys canceled the hearing.

Pre-indictment conferences are held to see if a case can be resolved before it goes to a grand jury for indictment. That is not expected to happen in this case.

The mayor has vehemently denied the accusations, alleging that he and his wife were targeted due to their race and that they control millions of dollars in public money due to their positions.
