Adriane McCann more than a decade ago published “Goober and Friends” through Xlibris Publishing, but said the book has undergone a renaissance the past two years.

The Accokeek resident started working as a substitute teacher with Charles County Public Schools in 2009 and two years later was hired as a job coach in special education in the Adult Independence Program. She also worked as a home and health teacher for the Charles County public school system.

While pursuing a master of divinity degree at Regent University, she took a temporary break to fully dedicate herself to writing her grandmother’s memoir, “Mimmy’s Secret.”

The book “Goober and Friends” is available for purchase at Amazon.

How long have you been writing, and how did you start?

I started writing poems and stage plays at 15 years old. As a child, I sat at my grandparents’ feet, often listening to stories about what happened in the early 1900s. At the age of four, I met my great-great-aunt who was 100 years old. Their stories shaped and inspired me to do storytelling. I began doing children’s Bible stories when I did my first story based on the Book of Genesis. Eventually, I started writing and published my first book in 2010.

    What inspires you to write?

Writing is my passion. I’m captivated by storytelling, as I’m fascinated by putting pen to paper and watching my words come to life. Additionally, I’m motivated by the children’s sense of wonder and how it motivates and inspires them to be their best selves. Additionally, it creates platforms for creativity.

Do you consider writing to be a career?

I have never considered writing as a career. However, writing is a passion of mine, and I plan to continue writing for the rest of my life because it keeps me centered.

What kind of writing process do you use?

I create an outline for how I want the book to flow. I have a writing pad; I often use a dictation tool on my laptop as it helps me to see and hear the flow of my manuscript. I thoroughly consider my audience and research my topic for accuracy and authenticity. I also discuss it with other authors and writers because it helps brainstorm ideas. I strive to find what will be most captivating for my readers.

Who are some of your favorite authors, and why?

Anthony Hoekema’s “Saved by Grace” is a great read that delves into a better understanding of regeneration and the Holy Spirit. I am captivated by Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven.” I was in middle school and was mesmerized by the symbolism and suspenseful storyline; it was as if I was in the storyline. His words could transport the reader to the scene. John Bevere’s “The Awe of God” takes you to a deeper understanding of the importance of the Holy Fear of God [and] his masterpiece had me re-evaluating my stance on fear and reverence for God. As a children’s book author, I have always loved Dr. Seuss’s books. I love the illustrations, poetry, and rhymes. His books are engaging, educational, and humorous, and I love the laughter they bring.

My writing style is a culmination of my favorite authors’ styles, as they lead readers to lean in closely and invite them into the story by captivating, engaging, intriguing, and inspiring them to want more!
