    West Cobb Library reopening July 18

    The West Cobb Regional Library, 1750 Dennis Kemp Lane in Acworth, will be reopening at 10 a.m. July 18 for regular hours.

    The library had previously been scheduled to be closed July 17-18 to allow for the repair of a water line leak.

    Dinners at Mableton Masonic Lodge

    The Mableton Masonic Lodge No. 171 F&AM, 90 Veterans Memorial Highway in Mableton, will have dinners for the community at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month.

    West Cobb Library temporarily closed

    The West Cobb Regional Library, 1750 Dennis Kemp Lane in Acworth, will be closed July 17-18 to allow for the repair of a water line leak.

    Regular library hours are expected to return July 19 at 10 a.m.

    Scheduled appointments for U.S. Passport services reserved for July 17-18 at the West Cobb Library are moved temporarily to the North Cobb Regional Library, 3535 Old 41 Highway in Kennesaw.

    Dave Koz & Friends Christmas Tour is Nov. 29

    The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre will present the annual holiday tradition of Dave Koz & Friends Christmas Tour at 8 p.m. on Nov. 29.

    Tickets go on sale 10 a.m. on July 19 on Ticketmaster.com .

    Marking the 27th anniversary of the longest-running jazz-based Christmas tour, Dave Koz & Friends will perform timeless Christmas classics, a Chanukah medley and hits from each artist’s respective catalogue. This year’s tour, which will visit 18 cities in less than a month, reunites Koz with long-time musical partner, guitarist/singer Jonathan Butler and features special guests, saxophonist Vincent Ingala, guitarist Adam Hawley and vocalist Rebecca Jade.

    Computer Basics series at South Cobb Regional Library

    The South Cobb Regional Library, 805 Floyd Road in Mableton, will have a Computer Basics Boot Camp series from 3 to 4:30 p.m. from July 22-25.

    The series is designed for novice computer users. Registration is required at cobbcat.org/events , at the library's Reference Desk or by calling 678-398-5831. Space is limited. Walked-ins will be allowed if space is available. Participants will have the option of selecting classes to attend or be in all four.

    The class lineup is Introduction to Computers on July 22; Introduction to the Internet on July 23; Microsoft Word Basics on July 24; and Microsoft Excel Basics on July 25.

    Be a Conversation Guide at Switzer Library

    The Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta, is looking for volunteers to be conversation guides for their upcoming English Conversation Circle in the fall.

    This program will provide a safe space for English language learners to practice speaking with others. Volunteers will guide conversations and discuss American culture.

    Genetic Genealogy and Crime Solving

    The Georgia Room at the Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta, will have Genetic Genealogy and Crime Solving at 6 p.m. on July 29.

    Since 2018, nearly 600 murder cases have been solved thanks to genetic genealogy. Participants can learn about genetic genealogy and how it is used to fight crime.

    Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy

    Learn more about the Sheriff’s Office at its Citizens Academy on Thursdays from Aug. 22 to Sept. 26.

    Participants can learn about the duties, structure and operations of the law enforcement office. The program is open to adults, ages 18 and up, with a valid government ID.

    Old tech needed for preservation

    Residents can donate their old VCRs and video cameras that are in good working condition to the Georgia Room at the Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta.

    The Georgia Room helps residents preserve old photos and videotapes by digitizing them and could use more equipment in good shape.

    Downsizing, decluttering and home safety seminar for seniors

    The Senior Citizen Council of Cobb County will have a seminar on downsizing, decluttering and home safety for senior citizens from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 23 at the Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta.

    Speakers will Roxie Hernandez, a relocation specialist, and Linda Kaplan from Changing Spaces, a consultant who has been awarded the highest distinction in Senior Move Management from the National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers. They will give advice on downsizing, particularly for those moving from a residence of 20-plus years; on rightsizing; and on decluttering for those planning to remain in their homes.

    Family Creek Stomp

    The Cobb County Water System will have a Family Creek Stomp from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on July 17 at the Leone Hall Price Park, 4715 Stilesboro Road in Kennesaw.

    Participants can walk a section of a creek in search of aquatic organisms and improve habitat and water quality by picking up litter. This event is for ages 7 and up. If one has sturdy, water shoes, please bring them. Closed-toed shoes only.

    Flower Stories

    The Sewell Mill Library & Cultural Center, 2051 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta, will have Flower Stories, a gallery exhibition, through Aug. 17.

    Participants can view floral works by the Roswell Fine Arts Alliance. Gallery hours are Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    Color Language art exhibit

    The Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta, will have the Color Language art exhibit for the month of July.

    Participants can enjoy the artwork of G.L. Laplante. The 21 pieces in the exhibit are the product of several imaginary “color languages” created to express feelings, emotions and events experienced in the artist’s life. Materials used to compose these pieces are discarded or repurposed items.

    Summer Recycling Craft Competition

    The Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta, will have the Summer Recycling Craft Competition from noon to 3 p.m. on July 17.

    Participants, grades 6-12, can create an art piece out of recycled materials and bring it to the library to present to a panel of judges. Prizes are $100 for first place, $75 for second, $50 for third and $25 for fourth. Winners will also be highlighted in the Georgia Recycling Coalition Publication.

    Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Bacterial Monitoring Workshop

    The Cobb County Water System will have a Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Bacterial Monitoring Workshop from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on July 17 at 662 South Cobb Drive in Marietta.

    E. coli is an indicator organism that is often used to assess water quality. Monitoring levels of E. coli can help identify possible sources of pollution. This workshop will focus on proper collection of a water sample, transfer of sample onto plates that will be incubated and proper interpretation of results. Volunteers who successfully perform the bacterial monitoring and pass the written test with a score of 90% or better will be considered a QA/QC volunteer for one year.

    Food Preservation Workshops

    The Cobb County Extension Office, 678 South Cobb Drive, Suite 200 in Marietta, will have the following Food Preservation Workshops:

    Aug. 21 will be Pickled Green Beans. Register by Aug. 14.Sept. 25 will be Pepper Jelly. Register by Sept. 18.Oct. 23 will be Apple Relish. Register by Oct. 18.

    KCB Back to School Supply Drive and Pop-Up Drop-off

    Keep Cobb Beautiful will have a Back to School Supply Drive and Pop-Up Drop-off from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 20 at the Cobb County Civic Center, 548 South Marietta Parkway SE in Marietta.

    Participants can donate to school children in need. Donations requested are backpacks, school supplies and non-perishable snacks for all ages. Participants can also meet Rose, Cobb County’s Comfort Dog. There will be a Minigolf Give Back, where participants can bring a bag of new school supply donations and get free admission.

    Participants can also drop off clean and emptied aluminum cans, cartons, glass bottles/jars, plastic bottles and flattened cardboard in the parking lot. Items not accepted are electronics, household trash, metal/batteries, paper/cartons/boxes, construction debris, medications, textiles, hoses/tubes/ropes, wood, food/liquids, paint or foil/aluminum.

    Any hard-to-recycle plastic items dropped off must be in the Hefty ReNew bags, which can be purchased at local Wal-Mart, Target, Kroger and Publix stores.

    Home Buyer Seminars

    The North Cobb Regional Library, 3535 Old 41 Highway in Kennesaw, will kick off a series of Home Buyer Seminars from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on July 20.

    Acworth Farmers Market

    The 2024 Historic Downtown Acworth Farmer’s Market will take place on Friday mornings until Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. to noon.

    The market is located at Logan Farm Park, 4405 Cherokee Street in Acworth. Market customers will have a wide variety of garden-ripe Georgia-grown vegetables, eggs, cheese, bedding plants, fresh-baked bread, pies, cakes, honey, and jams to choose from each week.

    M2R Traveling Fence Gallery in Acworth

    The City of Acworth will once again host the M2R Fence Gallery.

    This curated traveling art installation will be on display July 20 to Aug. 17 throughout the historic downtown and Parkside districts. To learn more about Marietta Arts Council, visit www.mariettaartscouncil.com .

    Classic Car Cruise

    Acworth’s Downtown Classic Car Cruise returns Aug. 31 at Logan Farm Park in Acworth’s Parkside District.

    Participants can hear the roar of the engines and take some photos of vintage automobiles. The event will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at Logan Farm Park, 4405 Cherokee Street in Acworth. The Lake City Cruisers partner with the City of Acworth to hold these Classic Car Cruises.

    The event is free to the public. A $5 entry fee is requested for all vehicles in the cruise. All proceeds go to the Horizon Field, an all-inclusive special needs sports facility in Acworth.

    Acworth Community Golf Tournament

    The Acworth Community Golf Tournament will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the Cobblestone Golf Course, 4200 Nance Road in Acworth.

    Cost is $125 per player or $500 per team. The tournament is hosted by the Acworth Police Community Foundation and the Acworth Public Safety Cadets to help raise money for both organizations.
