MADISON TWP. — Michigan might be experiencing a hot summer, but it’s nothing like what Madison graduate Caylan Sower is about to experience.

Sower is enrolled at the University Arizona and will begin her nursing classes next month. The temperature in Tucson averages 101 degrees in July and 100 in August.

“I really like the heat,” Sower said. “I hate the winter.”

Sower recently finished her three-sport high school sports career at Madison and has been named Madison’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

“I’m a competitor,” she said. “I love to compete in anything. I come from a competitive family. Sports kept me busy.”

Sower already is working in her chosen profession. She works as a nursing assistant at the Lenawee Medical Center. She will enter the University of Arizona with nearly 30 credit hours, earned from dual enrolling at Jackson College while in high school.

“This (past) spring I would work eight-hour shifts, then go to softball practice,” she said.

Sower has been playing sports as long as she can remember.

“Softball was first,” she said. “That’s what I’ve played the longest. I started playing T-ball when I could walk.”

She picked up basketball in kindergarten and volleyball a year or two later.

“I played travel sports for all of them,” she said.

Sower ranked in the top 10 in her class with a GPA of 4.0508. She earned nine varsity letters in her career, including four years of varsity softball, three years of varsity basketball and two years of varsity volleyball.

She was a two-year captain while playing catcher and third base for the Trojan softball team. She was an outside hitter and defensive specialist in volleyball and guard in basketball and accumulated a host of honors from the Tri-County Conference, Lenawee County Athletic Association, Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan and team awards from Madison.

Off the court and field, Sower was treasurer for Madison’s National Honor Society chapter. She also split her time with the I95 ministries, No Kids Without Christmas, county food pantry and was a Madison youth sports volunteer.

The daughter of Jennifer and Craig Sower is following her sister Callie to Arizona. Callie will be a junior at the University of Arizona and is the head manager of the softball team.

“She lives in an apartment, and I’ll live in a dorm,” Caylan said. “She’s just a few minutes away.”

Her sports days may not be finished.

“I might join a club sport out there,” she said. “Like I said, I’m pretty competitive in everything I do.”
