July 19, 1924: The boys camp of the Y. M. C. A. was organized Thursday afternoon when a party of 50, consisting of 40 boys, six leaders, the camp director and cooks, with equipment were transported to Vineyard lake by automobiles furnished by H. M. Judge, Paul Lentz, Harvey Aldrich, H. Clegg, Leon Roberts. A. R. Megary, R. E. Role, Clyde Harris and G. D. Titus, and trucks furnished by the Adrian Knitting Co., the Robert Hixon Lumber Co., the Wilco Hardware Co., and the We-Fix-It Garage. Thursday afternoon and evening were spent in making assignments and setting the camp preparatory to starting the regular routine Friday morning. Each morning the bugle for “fall in” will wake the boys, followed by a flag-raising, calisthenics, a morning dip and then breakfast. After breakfast comes tent inspection, a Bible study, recreational period and at 11 o’clock the mid-day swim, supervised by competent swimmers and leaders. The rest hour follows dinner, after which in order follow games and boating, camp duties, swimming, with supper at 6 o'clock. Stunts and games fill the evening hours with “lights out” at 8:30. The tent groups are named after Indian tribes, each group being supervised by an adult leader who is at all times responsible for the welfare and conduct of the boys of his tent. Tent leaders are H. Clegg, Hal Darling, C. M. Smith, Leon Roberts, G. Guest, L. Hayward, and the camp director, G. D. Titus. Special features for the coming week will be track and field day, water sports, overnight hike to Prospect hill, ducking day and the usual “snipe” hunt. Sunday will be a guests day at camp when parents and friends of the boys are invited to visit and inspect the camp. The usual Sunday service will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m.at which time the Rev. M. Forrest Ashbrook will speak to the campers.
