July 25, 1924: Earl C. Michener of Adrian, Republican, representative in Congress from the Second District of Michigan, is one of nine Republican representatives from Michigan who are “blacklisted” by Senator LaFollette and marked by his third party organization for opposition in their campaigns for re-election. A dispatch to The Chicago Tribune, from its Washington correspondent, published today, indicates that the LaFollette forces have been busy for weeks measuring the radical standard, or lack of radical standard, of the candidates for election to the new Congress. A definite blacklist has been decided upon for seven states in which primaries are to be held next month, and in other states, where the primaries come at later dates, the lists thus far drawn are said to be tentative. It is upon such a tentative list that the name of Rep. Michener of Adrian appears. Other Michigan representatives against whom the LaFollette forces plan opposition are: Arthur B. Williams of Battle Creek, third district; John C. Ketcham of Hastings, fourth district; Carl E. Mapes of Grand Rapids, fifth district; Grant M. Hudson of East Lansing, sixth district; Louis C. Crampton of Lapeer, seventh district; Bird J. Vincent of Saginaw, eight district; James C. McLaughlin of Muskegon, ninth district; and Frank D. Scott of Alpena, eleventh district. All are Republicans. After reading the dispatch from Washington this morning referring to the above campaign plans of the LaFollette organization, Mr. Michener stated he had no comment to make upon his inclusion in the “blacklist,” at least for the time being.
