Lake Monroe’s algae blooms will worsen without prevention
Algae blooms foul the taste of Bloomington’s drinking water most summers, but without prevention the effects could escalate. Indiana State Parks’ Deputy Director of Stewardship Ginger Murphy said blue-green algae thrives in Lake Monroe when nutrient-rich fertilizer and waste wash into the lake. She said algae blooms can produce toxins that endanger people and animals. She said Lake Monroe is safe for visitors provided they shower after swimming, but dogs should stay out of Indiana lakes.
Harrah’s Hoosier Park Set to Host Fifth Annual Empire of Hope Event
Anderson, IN — On Saturday (July 27), Harrah’s Hoosier Park will host the fifth annual Empire of Hope day. The Empire of Hope event is dedicated to raise funds for the after care of retired racehorses, with all proceeds directly benefitting the Standardbred Transition Alliance to assist efforts to relocate, rehabilitate and repurpose retired standardbred racehorses.

Adam Gray was a Late Model feature winner for the second consecutive week, Chris Matthews was a first time 2024 winner in the SK Light feature, Matt Clement notched his second win of the season in the Limited Late Model feature, and Jason Lafayette scored his second win of 2024 in the Street Stock feature.

I recently had the opportunity to interview an author from Salem. Her name is Tanya Coats Konerman, and she graduated from Salem High School in 1985. Konerman lived in Salem until she went to college at Indiana University and stayed there. She has a double major in Journalism and Psychology, with a focus on childhood development. Her home now is in Bloomington where she lives with her husband, who is an electrical engineer for Crane Naval Base. The couple have three daughters.
