Former Trump Attorney Supports Payday Lenders at Supreme Court

John Eastman, attorney who supported overturning 2020 election, now sides with payday lenders before High Court

An attorney who worked for former President Donald Trump and who authored a memo suggesting ways to overturn the 2020 election is now attempting to help payday lenders avoid accountability in a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

John Eastman has filed a brief supporting the Consumer Financial Services Association (CFSA) in their court case seeking to undermine funding for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). CFSA is a trade association representing payday lending companies.

Despite facing disbarment proceedings for his role in promoting overturning the 2020 election, Eastman is still actively practicing law.

Consumer advocates at The Revolving Door Project decried Eastman's involvement on behalf of payday lenders.

Vishal Shankar, a Senior Researcher at Revolving Door, said, "In spite of his own disbarment trial, John Eastman is continuing to advance crackpot legal theories on behalf of less-than-reputable characters. From now on, the CFSA v. CFPB case will be known as the Coup Plotter-Endorsed Lawsuit To Protect Predatory Payday Lenders. It is only fitting that the elite, arrogant lawbreakers who brought forth this anti-democratic attack on the CFPB in the first place have found a kindred spirit in John Eastman." 

Eastman filed the brief in favor of payday lenders on behalf of the Claremont Institute's Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence. Eastman has been involved in filing briefs in a number of recent, high profile cases advancing a conservative judicial agenda, including the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.
