Lawmakers to Introduce "Contraceptive Freedom Act"

    2023-11-14

Bill would protect access to all forms of contraception

Two Tennessee lawmakers plan to announce the Contraceptive Freedom Act, legislation that will be filed in time for the 2024 session of the Tennessee General Assembly.

Sen. Charlane Oliver of Nashville and Rep. Gloria Johnson of Knoxville have scheduled an announcement event for Wednesday, November 15th. They plan to discuss the proposed legislation and its potential impact.

The legislation would protect the right of Tennesseans to access a range of forms of contraception, including birth control pills, condoms, and IUDs. The lawmakers say the legislation is needed in light of the state's near-total ban on abortion.

Earlier this year, Johnson noted that the current law restricting abortion harms Tennessee women.

"My state, that I love dearly, has said that women are not equal," said Johnson. "There is no health decision that men are not allowed to make on their own in this state or this country. This is unacceptable."

This is Tennessee!!! Republicans have control of both houses, no such bill will go through!! Funny those republicans r pro-life but just recently they cut food assistance to poor children in Tennessee. One of the republicans said feeding those children have not proven beneficial to the state!!!!!

It seems to me, our government officials need to get the hell out of Americans bedrooms, pants, and bodies. From abortion, to gay rights, to the gender subject. Sex, is one area that definitely does not require government mandates, or intervention. We are perfectly capable of making these decisions for ourselves, without any government input. The decision to not get pregnant, or to terminate a pregnancy, should be made entirely by the woman, her partner (if there is one in the picture), her physicians, and whatever her beliefs are. Those who call abortion murder, are ignorant assholes. This country has some real serious problems that need the attention of the elected officials. Our bedrooms and sex are not one of them. They need to focus on the real problems.
