Democratic School Board Candidates Unite Against Vouchers

    2024-03-25

Candidates join in opposition to state voucher proposal

All four Democratic candidates for Williamson County School Board oppose state efforts to advance a school voucher scheme.

The candidates released a joint statement noting they believe public dollars belong in public schools.

Elmer Mobley (District 1), Diane Cochran (District 3), Shandus Parrish (District 9), and Laura Granere (District 11) are all running for seats on the Williamson County School Board in the general election held in August.

On behalf of the group, Mobley said:

“We are united in opposing vouchers because we’re listening to our neighbors, members of our communities and parents of students in Williamson County who are overwhelmingly against using taxpayer dollars to fund private schools. If the legislature was truly interested in education, why not take those dollars and invest them in our existing public schools?”

The current Williamson County School Board voted 7-5 last week in favor of a resolution expressing opposition to the expansion of the state's voucher program.

The Democratic candidates applauded the move and said, "Every child should have access to a quality education."
