Local minister applauds Anderson County's decision on teachers with guns

An Anderson County pastor is celebrating news that officials in the local school district have decided against arming teachers, despite a new state law allowing certain teachers to carry firearms on campus.

Rev. Brandon Berg, pastor of Norris and Sinking Springs United Methodist Churches, issued a statement by way of the Southern Christian Coalition.

"As a father of 3 children in Anderson County Schools I am enormously glad tremendously relieved that Anderson County schools and Dr. Parrott have joined so many voices and so many school systems and directors of schools across the state of Tennessee in standing up against arming teachers in our schools," said Berg.

He added, "They're choosing to partner with local law enforcement to keep our children safe. As a pastor I know that that is what we are called to do as followers of Jesus who always said, 'Let the little children come to me. Don't hold them back.' Jesus wants us to keep all of our children safe, to ensure that all of them have access to safe, free, public education so that all of our futures might be brighter, might be fuller, and more meaningful, because we know how to keep each other safe."
