A man has died in hospital after a drowning incident at Afton State Park Wednesday morning.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office was called at 9:41 a.m. after a 27-year-old man went under the water at the park, which abuts the St. Croix River.

Witnesses had lost sight of the man after he had been swimming 20-30 feet offshore in about 12 feet of water.

When deputies and first responders arrived, they found the man in about 18 feet of water. He was later transported to Regions Hospital.

In an update issued Wednesday afternoon, the sheriff's office said the 27-year-old later died.

His identity is expected to be released in the coming days.
