Clouds & Showers Overnight, More Storms Sunday and Monday
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Mostly cloudy skies remain over eastern Iowa as a few scattered showers form late tonight and early Sunday morning. You might notice over the next couple of days that the sky is a bit hazy and has a grayish-white color to it. That’s because we’re still dealing with wildfire smoke in our upper atmosphere from Canadian and western wildfires. While this smoke will give us vibrant colors in our sunrises/sunsets and hazy skies during the day, it will stay thin and elevated through the weekend. Therefore, air quality impacts are expected to be minimal. You can always check the latest air quality measurements on KCRG.com. Mostly cloudy skies linger through the overnight hours as lows drop into the upper 60s and low 70s. A few scattered showers are expected to form late tonight and early Sunday morning.

Humidity, Wildfire Smoke, & Scattered Storms
OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) -It’s a pleasant morning across Eastern Iowa with temperatures in the 60s and 70s. The sky is also a bit gray, not because of clouds, but because of wildfire smoke higher up in the atmosphere. Impacts to air quality will be minimal since most of the smoke won’t come to the ground. We’ll be dealing with wildfire smoke this weekend before the smoke starts to clear for the start of the workweek. Cloud cover will gradually increase this afternoon, coming in from the south. Highs this afternoon will reach the mid to upper 80s, however it will feel like the low 90s this afternoon since dew points are forecasted to reach the low 70s. Overnight, lows will cool into the mid to upper 60s with increasing clouds and isolated showers in the south. Isolated showers are possible on Sunday with temperatures in the mid 80s and dew points once again in the low 70s.
Rural Hospitals Built During Baby Boom Now Face Baby Bust
Rural regions like the one surrounding this southern Iowa town used to have a lot more babies, and many more places to give birth to them. At least 41 Iowa hospitals have shuttered their labor and delivery units since 2000. Those facilities, representing about a third of all Iowa hospitals, are located mostly in rural areas where birth numbers have plummeted. In some Iowa counties, annual numbers of births have fallen by three-quarters since the height of the baby boom in the 1950s and ’60s, when many rural hospitals were built or expanded, state and federal records show.

New Illinois Law Requires Weather Radios In Certain Homes
It's been a rough tornado season and a new Illinois law is taking aim at that. We can all agree it's been a messy summer. In the Chicago area alone last week, there were 33 tornadoes, compared to their usual 5 or 6 per year. With the derecho that moved through last week, 5 tornadoes rolled through the QCA. In Iowa, May was ridiculous. We average 11 tornadoes in May. But this year, we had over 80 tornadoes in May alone.
