There’s a dearth of dairy replacements in the countryside. Dairy farmers began to understand that market reality in September 2023. As a result, U.S. dairy producers have sent fewer cows to slaughter for 46 consecutive weeks dating back to September 3, 2023, in order to preserve dairy cow numbers.

The good news is that China has finally made a purchase of 2024 U.S. soybeans, but that news is tempered by the fact that it's their first and only purchase thus far. In a more typical year, the U.S. has counted on China to make several purchases by this time. Other than that, there’s been little in the way of good news for soybeans.

Today the USDA released the 20th Crop Progress report of the 2024 growing season. As of Aug. 11, 94% of the 2024 corn crop in the top 18 corn-growing states had reached the silk growth stage, the USDA says. This was up from 88% the week prior and is on par with the five-year average of 94%.
