    Fan Con NC looks to draw comic book, superhero buffs

    AHOSKIE — Fans of comic books, superheroes, movies, TV shows, horror, games and anime can enjoy a full day events devoted to those subjects during the inaugural Fan Con NC in Ahoskie next month.

    Produced by M&L Films, LLC, Fan Con NC will be held at the Ahoskie recreation gym located at 700 West Main Street, behind the Ahoskie High School Senior Apartments, on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

    According to a press release, a fan convention, or "fan con," is an event in which fans of a particular topic gather for programs, hold contests, meet experts and personalities, and network.

    The first-ever Fan Con NC will feature celebrity panels, costume contests, games, music, merchandise vendors, autograph sessions, food vendors, giveaways, and more.

    Celebrity panelists will include actor Curtis Lyons, actress and writer Arkeisha Roberts, Miss Black NC Ricki Nelson, actors Nick Basta and Aqeel T. Ash-Shakoor, and actress Alisa Harris. Each will discuss their work in film and television and be available for photo opportunities and autographs.

    Costume contests will be held by age group and feature various categories. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants in each category.

    According to organizers, the focus of Fan Con NC "is positive, creative self expression and how it can benefit mental health and well being." Educational vendors will be on hand to offer information and referrals to mental health service providers.

    Fan Con NC is being assisted with a grant from the Ahoskie Tourism Development Authority. The event will be family friendly and all ages are welcome, the release states. Tickets are $10 for teens ages 12-17 and seniors 65 and older, and $20 for adults ages 18-64. Kids 11 and younger can get in free.
