Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) has announced Mrs. LaTonzia Dorsey-Evans as the 2023-2024 Humanities Teacher of the Year. Dorsey-Evans, an Instructor of English at MVSU, was recognized by the Office of Academic Affairs. She will give a lecture titled “Moving the Crowd: The Intersection of Hip-Hop and Social Justice” on February 15, 2024.

Her lecture will examine the links between the Black Arts Movement, spoken word, and Hip-Hop's evolution. She will discuss how art can be used for social justice, especially in relation to Hip-Hop's 50th anniversary. The lecture will highlight the role of music in activism and artists' responses to social injustices affecting minorities in America.

Dorsey-Evans, a native of Mayersville, MS, is studying for a Doctorate at The University of Memphis in African American Literature and Cultural Studies. She has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts from William Carey University. Her research focuses on the Black Arts Movement, African American Literature, and Hip-Hop.

Before joining MVSU, Dorsey-Evans taught English at South Delta High School for a year. She then became the Sophomore Year Experience Coordinator at MVSU's University College.
