Grays Harbor College (GHC) plans to honor Women’s History Month with two guest speakers from Humanities Washington’s Speakers Bureau. Elise Hooper and Maria Chávez will give presentations on March 4 and March 13 at GHC’s Aberdeen campus. These presentations, free and open to the public, will be held in room 4141 of the Schermer/4000 Building.

Elise Hooper's talk, “Fast Girls: Trailblazing Women Olympians,” will delve into the history of women in the Olympics. She will recount the story of Betty Robinson, a 17-year-old student who won a gold medal at the 1928 Olympics, survived a plane crash, and won another gold medal in 1936. Hooper will also discuss the progress and challenges women Olympians have faced since 1900.

On March 13, Maria Chávez will present “The Firsts: Latina Struggles in the United States.” This presentation will discuss the unique challenges Latinas often face, particularly as first-generation college students. Chávez will use interviews and personal experiences to highlight these issues and suggest possible solutions.

Chávez, a political science professor at Pacific Lutheran University, specializes in American government, public policy, and Latino Politics. As a first-generation college graduate, her work examines the progress and obstacles of Latinos in the U.S. She has received the American Political Science Association’s Best Book in Latino Politics award twice.

The GHC event is designed to highlight the struggles and achievements of women, with a focus on the Olympics and the Latina community in the U.S. This event is part of a larger initiative to recognize and celebrate women's contributions throughout history.
