Young Harris College in Georgia has added a new course, 'Introduction to Museum Studies'. This follows the donation of the Cherry Farm Property, a farm near the college. The Cherry family from Hayesville donated the property in August 2023. The property, covering over 10 acres and featuring a farmhouse and barn, serves as a practical learning space for students.

Jackie Bruen, Library Associate of Special Collections, teaches the class. Students apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting by cataloging the house on the property. The house contains furniture, photographs, houseware, books, and other items from the 1930s. Senior Georgia Miller praised the experience, saying it was 'unlike anything I’ve done at Young Harris College so far'.

The Cherry Farm property is also a historical site. The barn is believed to be the oldest structure in Clay County. This adds significance to the students' work as they contribute to preserving local history.

The students' work will result in an exhibit design later in the semester. The exhibit will display items from the house and will be presented at Young Harris College’s Undergraduate Research Day on April 11, 2024.

Founded in 1886, Young Harris College is a private institution in North Georgia offering baccalaureate and master’s degrees. The college, an active member of the NCAA Division II, offers various academic divisions. The new 'Introduction to Museum Studies' course reflects the college's commitment to practical learning experiences.
