Jefferson Community College (JCC) is offering a free home-based childcare training program for residents of Jefferson and Lewis counties. The enrollment deadline is April 22, 2024. The program's goal is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to start a home-based childcare business in four months. The training includes 38 hours of non-credit business and health/safety courses, available both on campus and online. Participants will also get help with New York State registration and licensing.

The program offers additional support such as stipends for childcare and business start-up supplies. Participants can also join a closed Facebook group for local home-based childcare owners for networking and experience sharing.

The training program started in June 2021 to address the lack of childcare options for working families in the North Country. Since then, the program has created 64 local childcare spots, helping to alleviate the childcare shortage.

The program's success led to its replication in February 2023 in neighboring areas. This involved a partnership between JCC, Oswego County, Integrated Community Planning of Oswego County, the Small Business Development Center, and Oswego County Workforce New York. This shows the program's potential for broader application.

The training program is a partnership between JCC, Community Action Planning Council, and the NYS Small Business Development Center. It is supported by the Jefferson County Local Development Corporation and Advocate Drum. Interested individuals can enroll online or contact the JCC Workforce Solutions office. A mandatory meeting for program registrants will be held at JCC on April 25, 2024.
