Forty-five students from Washington County High School (WCHS) in Sandersville, Georgia, recently attended an event at Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC). The event, Waco Works, is sponsored by the Washington County Chamber of Commerce and aims to inform students about local education and career opportunities. It is a collaboration between OFTC, WCHS, and several local industries, and has been held twice a year since 2018.

Chamber President Katie Moncus highlighted the importance of workforce development, stating that Waco Works is a key part of their annual plan. OFTC, with its focus on workforce development, was identified as an ideal partner. OFTC President, Erica Harden, underscored the county's need for skilled labor and the role OFTC and WCHS can play in meeting this need.

Waco Works was initially funded by an EMC Electrical Foundation Grant. After the grant was used, the Chamber decided to continue sponsoring the event due to its positive impact on students and local industry. The event presents a variety of local career opportunities and aligns them with OFTC’s course offerings.

Selected students from the high school's Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) program participated in Waco Works. They toured several OFTC programs and visited local industries to learn about employment opportunities and requirements.

Dean Wilcher, Director of Work-based Learning for WCHS, urged students to learn about local education and job opportunities. He stressed the importance of networking with potential employers. Moncus agreed, stating that local initiatives like Waco Works are vital for meeting workforce needs. The event benefits many, including students, WCHS staff, and industry representatives.
