Piedmont Community College (PCC) recently recognized three students and an instructor from its Veterinary Assistant Program for their dedication. The students, Ashlyn Miller, Ashleigh Hayes-Austin, and Karah Shytle, each received a $750 stipend. The stipend, presented by Chris Davis and Dr. Shawnee Seese, is to help cover travel and other expenses during their clinical hours at local veterinary clinics.

Miller is at PetVet Wellness Center in Hillsborough, NC; Hayes-Austin is at Creekside Animal Clinic in Mebane, NC; and Shytle is at Woodsdale Animal Hospital in Roxboro, NC. This recognition highlights the program's commitment to excellence.

PCC Veterinary Instructor Melanie Gibson was also recognized for her efforts in the program. She received the “Shooting Star Award” for her dedication. Dr. Seese commended Gibson's teaching approach, noting that learning extends beyond textbooks and classrooms.

The PCC Veterinary Assistant Program prepares students to become a Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) Level 1 through the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA). This is achieved after completing training and documenting at least 200 laboratory and classroom hours and 300 clinical hours under a licensed veterinarian or certified veterinary technician.

The program is committed to enhancing partnerships within the animal science fields, especially with veterinarians and clinics. A new cohort begins every fall, with registration for the fall 2024 cohort opening in July 2024. The program aims to positively impact animals and their communities.
