Students from the four Texas State Technical College (TSTC) West Texas campuses are getting ready for the 2024 SkillsUSA Texas Postsecondary Leadership and Skills Conference in Houston, set for April 18-20. The group of 27 students from the Abilene, Breckenridge, Brownwood, and Sweetwater campuses is the largest from West Texas in recent years. SkillsUSA is an organization that fosters employability, leadership, and technical skills, with over 100 competition categories.

Among the participants is Javien Carbajal, a Welding Technology student from Brownwood. He will compete in the Welding event. Carbajal has been improving his welding techniques. Antonio Hood, a Computer Networking and Systems Administration student from Brownwood, will take part in the Technical Computer Applications event. Hood has been preparing by studying instructional videos and reviewing the process.

Several Paramedic students from TSTC’s Abilene campus, including Yvette Escobedo and Mari Vaughn, will compete as teams. They have gained confidence from their practical experience working together in Brady. Wind Energy Technology classmates Shayne Howard and Aulton Lira, from the same class, will compete individually in Electronics Technology. They have been training together and look forward to representing TSTC.

Winners from the SkillsUSA Texas Conference will qualify for the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference, scheduled for June 24-26 in Atlanta, Georgia. Registration for the summer and fall semesters at TSTC is now open for current students, and new students can register from April 8.
