Leanna O’Grady from Mud Creek Environmental Learning Center visited Mrs. McCagg’s Life Skills class at Hudson Junior High School. She discussed with students about the solar eclipse expected on April 8, 2024. The class did an interactive activity, using objects and a flashlight to show the alignment of the sun, earth, and moon during an eclipse.

The students made movable eclipse diagrams and measured the distance between the sun, earth, and moon in the hallway. This practical approach helped them better understand how an eclipse occurs. They also observed a simulation of the upcoming eclipse as it would look in Hudson, New York.

Besides the simulation, the class compared the expected view of the eclipse in Hudson to that in Syracuse, New York. This comparison showed the students how location can affect the visibility and appearance of an eclipse.

The session ended with students trying on eclipse glasses. They were also given their own pair for the upcoming solar eclipse. This visit by Leanna O’Grady helped students understand solar eclipses and prepared them for the upcoming event.
