Nacogdoches High School (NHS) is planning a chili cook-off fundraiser on April 8. The event will sell bowls made by NHS art students. Half of the proceeds will go to Nacogdoches HOPE, a local charity, and the other half will support the school's art program.

The fundraiser was planned by Maranda Marshall, an NHS art teacher. This is her first year back at NHS after teaching at Emeline Carpenter Elementary. The cook-off is scheduled on a student holiday and a professional development day for NISD staff. Teachers can buy a student-made bowl for $10.

Marshall's students have made 300 bowls for the event. NHS faculty and staff, as well as parents, have shown support by buying these bowls.

Marshall's fifth period ceramics class students have appreciated the creative freedom this project offers. Senior student Kristin Culver said Marshall encourages them to be more creative with their artwork. Another student, Annabelle Skinner, agreed that Marshall motivates them to push their artistic boundaries.

The chili cook-off will include a competition, with judges ranking the best chili and the best student-made bowls. Any unsold bowls will be available for purchase at NISD’s Fine Arts Showcase at NHS on April 13.
