Umpqua Community College (UCC) in Roseburg, Oregon, has finished remodeling its Truck Driving School. The updated facility aims to improve the learning experience for commercial driving students and support the program's growth. Last year, 92 students earned their commercial driver’s license (CDL) through the program's four-week course. This year, the program anticipates 136 students will complete the course.

According to Teresa Rivenes, vice president of Academic Services at UCC, the remodel includes upgraded classroom technology, larger classrooms, and a new private office. Other improvements include a breakroom with new appliances, improved lighting and cabinetry, a welcome area, new exterior paint, and a resurfaced yard for better training and safety.

The remodel was funded by a $75,000 grant from the Douglas County commissioners, additional funds from Douglas County and the State of Oregon, and federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act Coronavirus State Fiscal Recovery Fund. The Umpqua Indian Development Corporation managed the construction, and UCC contributed an extra $15,000.

The Truck Driving School will hold its grand reopening on May 2, 2024, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. The event will feature a dedication ceremony by the Umpqua Indian Development Corporation. The school is located at 6482 Dole Rd., Myrtle Creek.

Umpqua Community College is the regional center for higher education in Douglas County, Oregon. It provides college degree programs, workforce development, and community learning opportunities.

Never made much sense to me to put the truck driving school over a half hour away from the college itself.
