Four students from Labette Community College's (LCC) Psychology Club showcased their academic skills at the Psychology Research Symposium at Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) last week. The symposium encourages undergraduate students to present their research in Psychological Sciences. Two LCC students, Allison Plumlee and Becca Shackelford, were chosen to present their research orally, a notable accomplishment as they were the only community college students selected.

Allison Plumlee, a sophomore from Carl Junction, MO, presented her research on the psychological effects of child abuse, titled 'Saving Those who can’t Save Themselves.' Becca Shackelford, also a sophomore at LCC, presented 'The Psychology of Only Children,' a study on the psychological dynamics in single-child families.

Their achievements highlight the quality of education at LCC. DeAnna Huffman, Psychology Club sponsor and Associate Professor of Psychology, praised her students' efforts, stating that their dedication embodies the excellence LCC aims to cultivate.

The symposium, a significant event in the academic calendar, drew attendees from various colleges and universities across Kansas and other states. Students had to submit abstracts of their research projects for consideration. Huffman encouraged both Plumlee and Shackelford to submit their work, and they successfully met the challenge, using their previous coursework to enrich their research for the symposium.

As Plumlee and Shackelford prepare to graduate in May with an Associate of Science degree in Psychology, their achievements highlight the quality of LCC’s Psychology program. Other LCC student participants were Keaton Nino and Aaron Phillips. Huffman and Regina Decker, LCC Case Manager, accompanied the students on this trip.
