Demetrio Davila, from Colorado City, Texas, decided to return to college after seeing technicians at his previous job at a Sweetwater gypsum plant. He saw the opportunity for better working hours and more responsibility. Davila joined the Electromechanical Technology program at Texas State Technical College (TSTC) and is due to graduate this month with an Associate of Applied Science degree. His father, also a TSTC graduate, works as an I&E technician.

James Simonetti, a TSTC Electromechanical Technology instructor, commended Davila's teamwork and readiness to help his classmates. Simonetti believes Davila has a promising future as a technician. Davila plans to work in Mitchell County, near his hometown, to stay close to his family.

Davila enjoyed problem-solving in the TSTC labs. He found the programmable logic controllers curriculum challenging but thanked his instructors for their guidance. He said, 'The instructors, with their diverse backgrounds, provide a comprehensive understanding of what we need to know.'

Before graduating, Davila will represent TSTC at the 2024 SkillsUSA Texas Postsecondary Leadership and Skills Conference in Houston. He will compete in Mechatronics. SkillsUSA is an organization that helps college students develop skills for successful careers.

According to onetonline.org, the demand for electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians in Texas will increase by 14% from 2020 to 2030. The median salary for these technicians in Texas is $62,970. TSTC offers an Associate of Applied Science degree and certificates of completion at the Sweetwater campus. Registration for summer and fall sessions is now open.
