Surry Community College (SCC) has been named a Military Friendly School for 2024-2025. This is the thirteenth time SCC has received this recognition. The college also received the Gold School award, placing it in the top 10 percent of small community colleges.

The Military Friendly School award is based on public data and survey responses. Over 1,800 schools took part in the 2024-2025 survey, and 537 schools received special awards. The list of Military Friendly Schools for 2024-2025 will be published in G.I. Jobs magazine and on the Military Friendly website.

Jay McDougal, SCC's Veterans Affairs Specialist, stated that the award reflects SCC's commitment to veterans and their families. He mentioned that veterans use their benefits for various programs at the college.

The criteria for the Military Friendly School award were set by VIQTORY, the publisher of G.I. Jobs magazine. The Military Friendly Advisory Council also contributed. The final ratings were based on the institution’s survey scores and its performance in student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, and loan default rates.
