Surry Community College (SCC) has been named a Military Friendly® School for 2024-2025, marking its thirteenth receipt of this honor. The college also earned the Gold School distinction, placing it in the top 10 percent of small community colleges.

The Military Friendly® School title is given after evaluating public data and proprietary survey responses. The 2024-2025 survey saw participation from over 1,800 schools, with 537 earning special awards for surpassing the standard. The list of Military Friendly Schools for 2024-2025 will be available in G.I. Jobs magazine and on the Military Friendly website.

Jay McDougal, SCC’s Veterans Affairs Specialist and a 13-year Army veteran, expressed his pride in the recognition. He stated that this honor signifies the college's dedication to supporting veterans and their families. Veterans utilize their benefits for a variety of programs at SCC, including curriculum courses, Basic Law Enforcement Training, and Workforce Training and Career & College Readiness.

The criteria for the Military Friendly® School title were set by VIQTORY, the publisher of G.I. Jobs magazine. The Military Friendly® Advisory Council, a group of independent leaders in higher education and military recruitment, also contributed. The final ratings were based on the institution’s survey scores and its performance in student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence, and loan default rates, with a focus on student veterans.
