Surry Community College (SCC) is participating in STEM Education Month, part of the North Carolina Science Festival in April. The college's Science Division and Library are hosting events to promote STEM education. These include two events about solar eclipses, a presentation and a viewing experience.

On April 19, SCC is hosting an Agriculture Day at the Dobson campus for local high school students. The event includes an agricultural presentation, a petting zoo, and a plant sale. It's open to students and the community.

Later in April, two SCC science alumni will discuss their research and careers in STEM. Biologist Jayne Willard will talk about her research on cottonwood trees and wildlife in Minnesota. Winter Gary, from the Highlands Biological Foundation, will discuss conservation work in Highlands, N.C. This event is free and open to all.

SCC is also hosting a BioBlitz on the Dobson campus for homeschooling families and students. Participants will identify and record species in a specific area, learning about biodiversity and contributing to scientific research.

In recognition of SCC's STEM Education Month activities, the college's Science Division was invited to a reception at the Executive Mansion in Raleigh on March 6. For more information about STEM Education Month, contact Jeff Jones, SCC Science Division Chair.
