The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) and the City of Brownsville have launched a training program for middle managers called the Professional Development for Middle Management Program. This initiative will train 35 middle managers from the City of Brownsville in key skills including emotional intelligence, self-management, conflict resolution, and presentation skills.

The 11-week program, managed by UTRGV's Professional Development and Workforce Development (PEWD), includes 11 hours of instruction and four hours for a final presentation. Classes are held bi-weekly for two hours at the eBridge Center for Business & Commercialization and the UTRGV Brownsville Campus, starting April 16, 2024.

Blanca Davila, director of UTRGV PEWD, stated that the program supports the City of Brownsville’s efforts to improve leadership skills among city managers. This training is part of a larger strategy to enhance the performance of managers who are essential in leading teams and serving the community.

Perla Cepeda, the city’s director of Organizational Development and Human Resources, highlighted the program’s aim to improve leadership skills in line with the city's 'ONE City Culture'. This culture promotes teamwork and is committed to the growth of its employees.
