Cookeville is adding eight new outdoor pickleball courts at the Cane Creek multipurpose fields. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 29, attended by city officials and local pickleball enthusiasts. This development aims to meet the increasing demand for pickleball facilities in the area.

Rick Woods, the director of Cookeville’s Department of Leisure Services and Public Facilities, stated that the community has shown a strong interest in outdoor pickleball courts. He mentioned that the courts would attract new players and could host events, potentially boosting regional tourism. The courts are conveniently located next to the Cane Creek Recreation Center and Gymnasium, which should promote frequent use.

Harry Smith, from the U.S. Pickleball Association, shared the community's enthusiasm for the new courts. He noted that these will be the only dedicated outdoor pickleball courts within a 25-mile radius, fulfilling a significant need in Middle Tennessee. The community's excitement reflects the sport's growing popularity and the expected positive impact of the new facilities.

The project is expected to be completed by fall of 2024. The new courts are anticipated to serve as a regional hub for pickleball, attracting both local sports enthusiasts and visitors. This could also benefit local businesses and enhance the area's reputation as a sports tourism destination.

It’s really a shame we worry about our 25 to 40 year olds and can’t even build a field for the girls softball. It’s hard to get girls to come to the school because our athletic department will not fight for any funds for our youth. We wonder why we can’t beat Baxter, Livingston, Sparta and all the schools within 20 miles and 10 times or more smaller. All we care about is the adults. There sports is over and they need to help with there children to get better and not rely on the coaches.
