    Local Athletes Shine: Mount Vernon Track Teams Advance to State Championships

    The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys and Girls Track & Field teams competed at the GHSA Sectionals at Whitefield Academy in Mableton, Ga. this past weekend. Several team members qualified for the State Championships.

    Sophomore Haris Flynn and senior Curran Jolly performed well in the middle-distance events. Flynn won the Boys 1600M Run with a time of 4:28. Both he and Jolly placed in the Top 3 in the Boys 800M, qualifying for the State Championships. The Boys 4x800M Relay team, including Colin Maher, Jake Pierce, Matt Pierce, and Curran Jolly, also finished in the Top 3.

    Senior Xavier Shegogg qualified for the State Championships with a Top 8 finish in the Boys Long Jump, demonstrating the team's capabilities in field events as well.

    The girls' team saw strong performances from junior Kennedy Reynolds and Alexis Smith. Reynolds won the Girls 100M Hurdles in 14.79 seconds and qualified in the Girls 300M Hurdles. Smith had the fastest time of the year in the Girls 400M Dash among all 1A D1 schools and set a personal record in the Girls 200M, advancing to the State Championships.

    The highlight of the meet was the 4x400M Relay events. The girls' team, composed of Cora Champney, Alexis Smith, Gracie Urban, and Kennedy Reynolds, won and set a new school record. The boys' team, with Colin Maher, Ethan Pajot, Matt Pierce, Curran Jolly, and Haris Flynn, recorded this year's fastest time in their division.
