The DCTC Writing Challenge 2024 has concluded at Dakota County Technical College. Sponsored by the DCTC Bookstore and the Creative Arts and Writing Club, the competition encouraged students to write about self-growth, with entries between 500 and 3,000 words. This year, over a dozen students participated, each showcasing their unique styles and insights.

Mads McPhee, an Individualized Studies major, won first place with their entry 'Finding Safety,' earning a $600 scholarship and a $50 bookstore voucher. Maddie Beytien, who is completing her nursing prerequisites, came in second with 'Working in a Hospital,' receiving a $300 award and a $40 voucher. Third place went to Nadia Poitra, a Business Administration major and Blue Knights softball team athlete, for her submission 'Nookomis,' which brought her a $100 award and a $30 voucher.

The competition was judged by DCTC faculty members Wes Jorde, Joe Campbell, and Chris Hayes, who provided a critical evaluation of the submissions.

The winning entry, 'Finding Safety' by Mads McPhee, explores personal challenges and the search for a safe space. Mads, 23, from St. Paul, Minnesota, has shown a strong ability to create engaging stories. They aim to publish a novel series and are inspired by works like Tolkien’s 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings.'
