Resource Central, a nonprofit organization, collected over 20 truckloads of home goods during the University of Colorado Boulder's student move-out last week. This effort, in its fifth year, is part of a collaboration with the Environmental Center at CU Boulder. It aims to reduce waste by keeping unwanted items out of landfills. The program also supports community sustainability by making the move-out process more environmentally friendly.

Starting May 18, the public can access these items at Resource Central’s Materials Reuse facility at 6400 Arapahoe Road in Boulder. Available items include fans, heaters, small appliances, lamps, mirrors, organizing bins, decorations, and tableware. This initiative allows community members to purchase useful items at lower prices and supports environmental conservation.

Neal Lurie, President and CEO of Resource Central, discussed the environmental advantages of reusing resources. He noted that the program makes it easy for students to donate their dorm items, which community members can then reuse. This contributes to a more sustainable future.

Since 2019, the program has kept nearly 65,000 lbs of materials out of landfills. This year, it accepted a wider range of items, which may increase the total collected. Angie Gilbert, Zero Waste Program Manager at the CU Environmental Center, commended the partnership with Resource Central. She stated that their efforts foster sustainable practices, social responsibility, and a circular economy, benefiting the community during the student move-out.
