The Western Kentucky University (WKU) meteorology program is preparing for its 15th annual Storm Chase, also known as the Field Methods in Severe Weather Analysis and Forecasting course. Starting on May 21, this course provides meteorology students with practical experience in forecasting and documenting severe weather patterns. Since its introduction in 2010, the course has enabled students to apply their classroom knowledge in real-world situations, improving their severe weather analysis skills.

This year, eight students will spend two weeks in the Great Plains, a region noted for its frequent severe weather. The trip serves as both an educational experience and a field operation, where students can develop emergency planning and response skills. University Meteorologist Josh Durkee pointed out the importance of this year's chase, especially given the above-average severe weather season, which offers numerous learning opportunities.

The 2024 Storm Chase is supported by a $15,000 donation from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, which helps ensure that students from all financial backgrounds can participate. This support is part of WKU's effort to provide inclusive and comprehensive educational experiences.

Participants in this year's chase come from various academic fields, including Homeland Security Sciences, Meteorology, Geographic Information Science (GIS), and Emergency Management Disaster Science (EMDS). These students will gain valuable field experience and later contribute to the WKU Disaster Science Operations Center, training others in severe weather emergency preparedness.
