The Idaho Field of Heroes Memorial in Pocatello is observing its 20th anniversary this Memorial Day weekend. The event, taking place at Century High School’s soccer fields from May 24 to May 27, commemorates U.S. service members who lost their lives in the Global War on Terrorism. The Memorial serves as a symbol of remembrance in Bannock County, Idaho.

Melissa Hartman, the event organizer and Bannock County Veteran Services Coordinator, stated that the Memorial unites the community regardless of political or organizational affiliations. Hartman noted that the event allows the community to appreciate the freedoms secured by the sacrifices of these service members.

This year, the Memorial includes 7,064 markers, each representing a service member who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Additionally, 97 markers honor those from Idaho who have died since September 11, 2001. The field is accessible to the public around the clock for reflection.

The weekend features various ceremonies and activities to honor the deceased and involve the community. Activities begin with a dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. on Friday. Other events include a youth ceremony, flag folding, and a Run to Remember, which also raises funds for the Memorial. This run starts on Saturday morning at the school’s track.
