Upcoming Take-A-Hike event will be at Redcliffe Plantation
Residents will have a chance to get outside and explore one of Aiken County historic landmarks this month. The City of Aiken Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department will hold a Take-A-Hike event Saturday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be the Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site, 181 Redcliffe Road, Beech Island.

A dedication ceremony for the Fort Galphin State Historical Marker will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 12, at the Silver Bluff Audubon Center and Sanctuary, 4542 Silver Bluff Road, Jackson. A three mile loop trail leads to the Savannah River and the Fort Galphin Site. Weather permitting, driving will be allowed. Attendees should bring lawn chairs, binoculars, sunscreen and bug spray. The marker is sponsored by the S.C. Society Children of the American Revolution in collaboration with the Aiken County Historical Society. Thurston Williams named principal of New Ellenton Middle Steam Magnet School
Aiken County Public Schools has announced Thurston Williams as the new principal of New Ellenton Middle STEAM Magnet School for the 2024-25 school year. Williams most recently served as an assistant principal for Kennedy Middle. He has more than a decade of teaching experience ranging from Special Education to Mathematics, along with experience in administration at the middle and high school levels.
