Updates to USC Aiken Softball Field, plus what’s new in soccer

AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) – Some new updates to the new University of South Carolina Aiken softball field are expected to be done by next spring.

Leaders within the athletic department at USC Aiken say the field will be ready by spring season, and a hit out of the park for their players.

“Just grateful to our university and our state and our representatives, that representative Aiken and to have the funding to build such a first-class facility…,” USC Aiken’s Director of Athletics Todd Wilkinson said.

The idea for the new field started when the National Guard Cyber Security Center at USC Aiken laid down its roots.

“So, that’s the most important part, along with getting a modern, up-to-date facility for our program. Now the planning for this has been going on a long time,” Wilkinson said.

Finally moving the Lady Pacers softball team across from the Convocation Center next to the current baseball stadium and home to the future soccer field.

“It’s gonna be an outstanding facility as well, its target day to be complete will be next fall of 2025– a synthetic turf field as well. The uh– of course it’ll be lit and a nice new clubhouse for both of our teams is what the planning is…,” Wilkinson said.

Construction on the new softball field is underway, and the athletic director is excited for what’s to come.

“The facility that we’re building is made for softball. It’s gonna be a synthetic turf field– Satcher field is actually repurposed from a baseball field into a softball field. So, the dugouts are originally set up for baseball, and they weren’t quite at the angle they needed to be and the dimensions may have been a little awkward. But this field is being built right from the start as a softball facility, and a first-class softball facility for sure,” Wilkinson said.

Wilkinson says plans call for the field to be ready in the fall.

“Construction started early summer and the target date to complete it is gonna be September.”

Putting the finalization just in time for spring Season. Those a part of USC Aiken are confident this new field will be a home run.
