Nationwide Deli Meat Recall: What You Need to Know

A major recall is underway due to a listeria outbreak that’s affecting several popular products. Boar’s Head is at the center of this recall, impacting more than 200,000 pounds of its meats sold at major supermarkets like Publix and Milam’s Market, as well as various independent delis.

The recall includes a range of Boar’s Head products, including liverwurst, ham, bologna, bacon, and salami. If you’ve picked up any of these from Publix or another local shop, here’s what you need to know.

    What’s Happening?

The recall is linked to a listeria outbreak that has unfortunately resulted in two deaths and over 30 hospitalizations across 13 states. The issue was discovered when a sample of liverwurst tested positive for listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacteria that can cause serious illness, particularly in pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Boar’s Head quickly acted to pull the affected products from store shelves. Lindsey Willis from Publix confirmed, “We’ve already removed the products listed in the recall from our stores.” The recall was officially announced by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, which detailed the products affected.

    What Products Are Involved?

    The recalled items include:

    • Liverwurst: Boar’s Head Strassburger Brand Liverwurst in 3.5-pound loaves or various sliced packages, with sell-by dates from July 25 to August 30, 2024.
    • Ham: Boar’s Head Virginia Ham (9.5-pound and 4.5-pound whole products, or various sliced packages) and Boar’s Head Italian Cappy Style Ham (4-pound packages).
    • Bologna: Boar’s Head Bologna (4-pound and 2.5-pound packages).
    • Salami: Boar’s Head Beef Salami (2.5-pound packages).
    • Bacon: Boar’s Head Steakhouse Roasted Bacon Heat & Eat (5.5-pound packages) and other assorted varieties.

If you have any of these products at home, the recommendation is straightforward: either throw them away or return them to the store for a refund. Boar’s Head is urging customers to check their fridges and dispose of any recalled items to avoid potential contamination.

For those who are concerned about exposure or symptoms, it's best to consult with a healthcare provider. Symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues.

    Staying Informed

Boar’s Head is fully cooperating with health authorities to resolve the situation and ensure product safety. They’ve also set up a customer service line at 800-352-6277 for anyone with questions about the recall.

For food safety inquiries, you can contact the USDA Meat and Poultry. Keeping track of these updates will help you stay informed and safe.
