A recent inspection at the Winn-Dixie located at 1019 S. Federal Hwy., Deerfield Beach uncovered several food safety and sanitation concerns that led to the store receiving a "Re-Inspection Required" status, the most severe outcome from Florida Department of Agriculture inspections.

Inspectors Tasheka Edmond and Christine McIver conducted the inspection on August 28, 2024, and while the number of issues was not extensive, the severity of the violations raised significant concerns.

    Notable Findings:

    1. Grain Insects in Packaged Pasta The inspection revealed grain insects inside boxes of pasta. Specifically, four 16-ounce boxes of SE Grocers Penne Pasta were affected, prompting an immediate Stop Sale order and removal of the products from shelves.
    2. Mold in the Produce Section In the produce department, inspectors discovered a mold-like buildup on loose mushrooms. As a result, a 3-pound pack of mushrooms was discarded due to a Stop Sale issued by the inspectors.
    3. Improper Temperature for Cut Fruit Cut watermelon and cantaloupe in the produce section were found to be stored at temperatures between 43 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit, exceeding the safe limit of 41 degrees Fahrenheitrequired to prevent bacterial growth. This led to a Stop Sale on both the watermelon and cantaloupe.
    4. Roach Infestation in Restroom Several live roaches were spotted in the men's restroom located in the backroom area of the store. This prompted inspectors to issue a Stop Use Order for the restroom until the issue is addressed.
    5. Additional Sanitation Issues
      • Inspectors noted soil buildup on honeycomb vents throughout the retail area.
      • The store's ceiling tiles showed signs of water damage, and the walk-in cooler in the produce department had water dripping from a seam in the ceiling, raising further concerns about sanitation.

    Next Steps

With the store receiving a "Re-Inspection Required" status, the management must resolve these issues to meet state food safety regulations. The follow-up inspection will determine whether the necessary improvements have been made to ensure customer safety and compliance with food handling standards.

This inspection serves as a reminder of the importance of regular and thorough sanitation in food service establishments.
