If you’re a fan of breakfast biscuits, you might’ve heard of Maple Street Biscuit Company, a popular breakfast spot that’s actually owned by Cracker Barrel. Unfortunately, their Tallahassee location had to temporarily close its doors after a recent state inspection revealed some troubling issues.

Maple Street Biscuit Company has built quite the reputation since it first opened in Jacksonville back in 2012. Cracker Barrel bought the chain in 2019 for $36 million, and now there are 23 Maple Street Biscuit locations across Florida. The Tallahassee spot, located at 1600 W. Call Street, has been a hit with locals, boasting a 4.5-star rating on Google. People who dine in seem to have great experiences, but not everyone is thrilled, especially those who order takeout.

    What Went Wrong?

Things took a turn for the worse during an inspection on August 23, 2024. According to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, three violations were noted, with two being classified as high-priority.

One of the major issues involved an employee handling raw chicken with gloves and then changing gloves without washing their hands in between. If you know anything about food safety, you can imagine how concerning that is. Cross-contamination is a big no-no in any kitchen.

But that wasn’t the only problem. There was also an issue with wastewater backing up from the floor drains beneath the dishwashing area, which made it impossible for staff to access the wash station without contaminating the prep areas and cook line. Not exactly something you want happening where your breakfast biscuits are being prepared.

    The Temporary Shutdown

Because of these violations, the restaurant was temporarily shut down to get everything sorted. The good news is, they moved quickly to fix the issues. After a follow-up inspection later that same day, on August 23, the restaurant was cleared of any violations and given the green light to reopen.

What Does This Mean for Maple Street Fans?

For the many loyal fans of Maple Street Biscuit Company, this temporary hiccup doesn’t necessarily mean the end of their biscuit love. Mistakes happen, and it’s clear the restaurant took immediate action to address the problems and meet inspection standards.

If you’re in Tallahassee and craving one of their signature biscuit-based breakfasts, the doors are back open, and they’re ready to serve you once again. But hey, maybe give it a few days before you swing by—just to be sure everything’s in tip-top shape!

So, if you’re still dreaming of that Squawking Goat biscuit, it’s safe to say you’ll be able to get your fix soon enough.
