Popular Pizza Chain Closes Underperforming Florida Locations
25 days ago
Florida is about to say goodbye to a couple of locations of a pizza chain that was once crowned “The Best Pizza Chain in America” by USA Today’s Great American Bites. The chain in question? Anthony’s Coal-Fired Pizza and Wings, a favorite spot for many Floridians who crave that unique, coal-fired taste.
A Slice of What Makes Anthony’s Special
For those who aren’t familiar, Anthony’s Coal-Fired Pizza and Wings is known for its signature “well-done” pizza, baked to perfection in a 900-degree coal-fired oven. Along with its famous pies, Anthony’s serves up delicious chicken wings, meatballs, sandwiches, and salads, making it a go-to spot for those who want more than just a slice.
The company was acquired by BurgerFi International, Inc. in 2021, and it quickly became a hit among pizza aficionados. If you ask folks in Tampa, they'll tell you Anthony's has some of the best pies around, earning a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor. Many customers rave about the authenticity and quality of their pizza.
So, What Went Wrong?
Despite the love from loyal fans, it seems that even the best aren’t immune to tough times. Recently, BurgerFi International, the parent company of Anthony’s, filed for bankruptcy. The company expressed hope to keep its restaurants running, but recent filings indicate that some underperforming and “burdensome” locations will need to close their doors.
Which Locations Are Shutting Down?
Florida is losing two of Anthony’s Coal-Fired Pizza and Wings locations:
1900 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach
420 E. Altamonte Drive, Suite 1020, Altamonte Springs
It’s always a shame to see beloved local spots shut down, especially ones that have such a passionate following. But as many pizza lovers know, the restaurant industry can be unpredictable, and even the most popular chains can face challenges.
The Bigger Pizza Picture: Where Does Florida Go From Here?
Interestingly, Anthony’s wasn’t even the top pizza choice in Florida. According to a survey by TOP Agency, the Sunshine State’s favorite pizza chains are Papa John’s, followed by Papa Murphy’s and Domino’s. Yet, there's no denying that Anthony’s brought something special to the table with its coal-fired, crispy pies.
While the closures are disappointing, there’s still hope for fans of Anthony’s Coal-Fired Pizza and Wings. There are other locations that continue to operate, so if you’re craving that “well-done” flavor, you might just have to drive a little further to get your fix.
The news of these closures serves as a reminder of how tough the restaurant industry can be, even for chains that have a loyal customer base. As Floridians, we’re lucky to have a variety of pizza options, but the loss of any beloved eatery is always a bit of a downer. Here’s hoping that the remaining Anthony’s locations continue to thrive and serve up their delicious pies for many more years to come.
